Organic Kaniwa ("baby quinoa") (Bolivian)
Kaniwa is also known as Baby Quinoa - it is significantly smaller in size with a crunchy texture and dark red colour. While nutritionally similar to Quinoa, it is slightly higher in calories due to it's size filling more gaps between seeds.

Our Organic Kaniwa can be used in much the same way as quinoa, as a base for mains like meats or stir fry, or as a side dish on its own. It is loaded with protein, fiber, anti-oxidants and minerals like iron and calcium. The protein is especially important as it contains all 9 essential amino acids required by the human body.
Because of the minisule size, it is easily combined with other ingredients in soups, souffles and cassaroles. The slightly nutty flavour is mild and almost sweet - making it great with meats, tofu and seafood.
Kaniwa can be used like rice or pasta as a base for other foods or side dish, but is also very versatile on its own. It can be made similar to oatmeal with 1/3 cup Kaniwa to 1 cup water, but should be simmered for 15-20 minutes so that the water can soften the texture.
Kaniwa can be customized with all sorts of fruits, spices nuts including apples, pears, dried cranberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, almonds, and walnuts.
